A complete set of custom 3D printed mechanical components for a real pendant-lighting installation: lampshades, decorative cable clips, conduit mounts, junction covers and suspension parts.
THE PROJECT
Custom parts for a non-standard installation
This project involved the development and production of several custom 3D printed components where standard off-the-shelf parts were not suitable for the intended installation.
U24Lab designed and manufactured decorative lampshades together with purpose-built junction covers, clips for exposed textile cable, mounts for protective conduit and suspension components adapted to the wooden structure. The project therefore combined visible design elements with small functional parts made for specific mounting locations and cable paths.
01 · LAMPSHADES
3D printed lampshades
The pendant lights use custom spherical 3D printed lampshades with a repeating geometric surface pattern. The printed surface is deliberately visible and forms part of the appearance of the finished installation.
The geometry was developed with additive manufacturing in mind, allowing multiple matching shades to be produced without dedicated moulds or tooling. This made 3D printing suitable for a custom design produced in a limited quantity.
02 · CABLE ROUTING
Custom covers and cable-routing parts
Several purpose-built components were required to integrate the exposed textile cable with the wooden structure. The parts were designed around the available mounting locations and the geometry of the installation.
Instead of adapting generic plastic hardware, custom 3D printing allowed the covers and cable guides to follow the required cable path and create a cleaner transition between the cable, mounting points and surrounding structure.
03 · MOUNTING
Suspension and mounting components
Additional custom parts were developed for cable routing and suspension at specific points of the structure. Each component was designed around its actual mounting location instead of being treated as a generic fitting.
This is a typical use case for custom 3D printing: the individual part is relatively simple, but its dimensions and geometry are specific enough that a standard component may not fit cleanly or perform the intended function.
04 · DECORATIVE CABLE
Clips for exposed textile cable
Small custom clips were designed to guide and retain the decorative textile cable along the timber structure. Their geometry follows the cable diameter and the available fixing surface, keeping the routing controlled without introducing oversized generic hardware.
These are simple parts, but they illustrate where custom 3D printing is especially useful: a small quantity, a specific cable and a mounting condition that benefits from geometry made for the job.
05 · CENTRAL COVER
Purpose-built central junction cover
A dedicated enclosure was developed for the central point where four cable routes meet. The outside geometry was shaped around the timber structure and the directions of the incoming cables, creating a compact cover instead of adapting a generic electrical box to the visible installation.
The component is a mechanical enclosure only. U24Lab designed and manufactured the printed part; the electrical connections inside it were outside our scope.
06 · CONDUIT MOUNTING
Custom mounts for protective conduit
Protective corrugated conduit feeding the installation also required dedicated mounting hardware. The components were modelled around the conduit profile and the available timber surfaces, including an end cover and intermediate retaining mounts.
CAD section views were used to verify the internal fit and retaining geometry before printing, then the finished parts were installed directly on the structure.
WHY 3D PRINTING
Useful when every part has a specific job
The project required several different custom components in relatively small quantities. FDM manufacturing made it possible to adapt geometry to the installation without dedicated production tooling.
DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT
Designed for the actual installation
Several functional components were modelled around the real mounting locations, cable paths and available space in the wooden structure. Instead of adapting generic holders and covers, the geometry could be developed specifically for the installation and reviewed in CAD before manufacturing.

Electrical design, selection of electrical components, wiring, electrical connections and electrical installation were outside the scope of U24Lab's work. The printed covers, clips and mounts shown here are mechanical components manufactured for the project.
